Are Digital Picture Frames Safe? Security & Privacy Guide

When you send a photo to a digital frame, where does it go? Who can see it? Is your data safe? These are fair questions. Here is what you need to know about security and privacy on digital picture frames.

How Cloud Storage Works

WiFi frames send your photos to the company's cloud servers. This is how remote sharing works. You upload a photo from your phone, it goes to the cloud, and the frame downloads it from the cloud.

The company stores your photos on their servers. For Aura, that is Amazon Web Services. For Nixplay, it is their own cloud platform. For Skylight, photos are stored securely on their servers.

Who Can See Your Photos?

Only people you invite. Each brand uses an account system. You create an account, pair the frame, and invite family members. Only people with access to the app or the frame's email address can send photos. Nobody outside your circle can see your slideshow.

That said, the company technically has access to the photos stored on their servers. Their privacy policies say they do not look at or sell your photos. But the data does sit on their servers.

Brand-by-Brand Privacy Breakdown

• Aura: Photos stored on AWS. AES-256 encryption in transit and at rest. Privacy policy states they do not sell your data. Account required.
• Nixplay: Photos stored on their cloud. Encrypted in transit. 500 MB free, more with subscription. Privacy policy is standard, no data selling.
• Skylight:Photos stored securely. Email-based sharing means anyone with the frame's email address can send photos. This is simple but means you should not share the email address publicly.
• Pix-Star: Photos stored on their cloud and locally on the frame. Email sharing available. Remote web interface lets you manage the frame from a browser.
• Frameo-based frames: Photos stored locally on the frame, not in the cloud. This is the most private option. No company server holds your photos.

The Most Private Option

If privacy is your top concern, use a frame with local storage only. Frameo-based frames store all photos on the frame itself. Nothing goes to a cloud server. The downside: if the frame breaks, the photos are gone. Keep copies on your phone.

Non-WiFi frames are even more private. The Dragon Touch and Aluratek never connect to the internet. Your photos stay on a USB drive or SD card. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

WiFi Security

Your digital frame connects to your home WiFi like any other device. It uses the same WPA2 or WPA3 encryption as your phone and laptop. As long as your WiFi password is strong, the frame is no more of a risk than any other connected device in your home.

A few tips to keep things secure:

• Use a strong WiFi password. Avoid defaults like "password" or "12345678."
• Keep the frame's firmware updated. Updates often include security patches.
• Do not share the Skylight or Pix-Star email address publicly.
• Remove old users from the frame's app if they should no longer have access.

What Happens If the Company Shuts Down?

This is the biggest risk with cloud-based frames. If Aura, Nixplay, or Skylight ever goes out of business, their cloud servers could go offline. That means your cloud-stored photos could be lost.

To protect yourself, always keep copies of your photos on your phone, computer, or a backup service like Google Photos. The frame should be a display, not your only storage.

For most people, the security and privacy of major brands like Aura, Nixplay, and Skylight is solid. Your photos are encrypted and stored safely. If you are especially privacy-conscious, go with a Frameo-based frame or a non-WiFi frame that keeps everything local.

The biggest practical risk is not hackers. It is losing photos if a company shuts down. Back up your photos separately and you are covered.
