Digital Picture Frame Sizes: Which Size Should You Buy?
A guide to choosing the right screen size for your digital picture frame.
Digital picture frames come in sizes from 7 inches to over 20 inches. The right size depends on where you plan to put the frame and how far away you will be when you look at it.
8 to 10 Inches: The Most Popular Size
Most digital frames sold are in the 8 to 10 inch range. This is the sweet spot for desks, nightstands, shelves, and kitchen counters. A 10-inch frame is big enough to see photos clearly from a few feet away but small enough to fit on most flat surfaces.
If you are buying your first digital frame, start with a 10-inch model. It works in almost any room and for any use case.
13 to 15 Inches: Living Room and Wall
A 15-inch frame makes a real visual impact. Photos look more like prints than digital images at this size. These frames work great on walls, mantels, and large shelves.
The tradeoff is that 15-inch frames are larger, heavier, and more expensive. They also need a higher resolution screen to look sharp. A 1280 by 800 screen that looks fine at 10 inches looks soft and blurry at 15 inches. Look for at least 1920 by 1080 (Full HD) on frames this size.
20+ Inches: Digital Art Display
Frames over 20 inches are more like digital art displays than photo frames. The Meural Canvas II at 21.5 inches is the main option in this range. At this size, the frame becomes a focal point in the room. It looks like a painting on your wall.
These large frames are expensive and typically aimed at art lovers rather than people who just want family photo slideshows. But if you have the budget and the wall space, they look stunning.
Matching Size to Location
- Desk or nightstand: 8 to 10 inches
- Kitchen counter: 10 inches
- Bookshelf or mantel: 10 to 15 inches
- Wall in living room: 15 to 21 inches
- Hallway wall: 15 inches
Resolution at Each Size
Bigger screens need more pixels to look sharp. Here is a quick guide:
- 8 to 10 inches: 1024 by 768 minimum, 1280 by 800 recommended
- 13 to 15 inches: 1920 by 1080 minimum
- 20+ inches: 1920 by 1080 or higher
Avoid buying a large frame with a low resolution. A 15-inch frame at 1024 by 768 will look blurry. Spend more for a sharp screen or get a smaller frame with better resolution.
