The full review
The Aura Carver is a landscape-only frame with a 10.1-inch widescreen display. We did not test it in a lab. This page is built from Aura's published specs and help pages.
The screen is 1280 by 800, the same as most frames this size. Aura says the colours are calibrated at the factory and the finish is semi-matte. That is meant to make photos look less like a screen.
The Carver has a smart way to show portrait photos. Instead of one tall photo with black bars on the sides, it puts two portrait photos side by side. That fills the whole screen.
You set it up in the Aura app over Wi-Fi. It links to Google Photos and iCloud. You can also invite family to send pictures from anywhere.
Aura says its smart cropping finds faces and centres them, so nobody gets cut off. You can change a crop in the app if you want.
Like all Aura frames, the Carver comes with free unlimited cloud storage. There is no plan to pay for.
The Carver does play video. Clips can run up to 30 seconds, which is longer than the 15 seconds Nixplay allows on its free plan. There is a catch. Video plays silent while the frame cycles, and you tap the bar to hear sound. If you want sound to just play on its own, Nixplay is the easier choice.
The Carver sits in our $100 to $200 band. With free storage and no plan, it costs nothing more after you buy it.
