Digital Picture Frame Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide
Fix common digital frame problems: WiFi issues, black screen, app not syncing, blurry photos, and more.
Digital frames are simple devices, but they can have problems just like anything else. Here are the most common issues and how to fix them fast.
Frame Will Not Connect to WiFi
This is the number one problem people run into. Try these fixes in order:
- Check your WiFi password. This sounds obvious, but a wrong password is the most common cause. Re-enter it carefully on the frame.
- Move the frame closer to the router. A weak signal causes connection failures. Test it right next to the router first.
- Check the WiFi band. Many frames only support 2.4 GHz WiFi, not 5 GHz. If your router uses both, make sure you connect to the 2.4 GHz network.
- Restart the frame. Unplug it, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
- Restart your router. Power cycle the router and try again after it fully boots up.
- Update the frame firmware. Some frames fix WiFi bugs through software updates. Check the app or the frame's settings menu.
Black Screen or Frame Will Not Turn On
- Check the power cable. Make sure it is plugged in securely at both ends, the frame and the outlet.
- Try a different outlet. The outlet might be dead or controlled by a wall switch.
- Check the motion sensor. If the frame has a motion sensor, it may have turned the screen off because nobody walked by. Wave your hand in front of the sensor.
- Check the schedule. Many frames have sleep schedules. If the frame is set to turn off at 10 PM, it will show a black screen until the morning.
- Factory reset. As a last resort, reset the frame to factory settings through the settings menu. This erases all data on the frame, so only do this if nothing else works.
App Not Syncing Photos
- Check the frame's WiFi connection. The frame needs internet to receive new photos. Go to the frame's settings and make sure WiFi is connected.
- Update the app. Go to the App Store or Google Play and check for updates.
- Force close and reopen the app. Swipe the app away and open it again.
- Log out and log back in. This refreshes the connection between the app and the frame.
- Check storage. If the frame or cloud account is full, new photos cannot be added. Delete old photos or upgrade your storage plan.
Photos Not Showing or Missing
- Wait a few minutes. After sending photos, it can take a few minutes for them to appear on the frame.
- Check the playlist or album. On Nixplay, make sure the photos are in an active playlist. On Aura, check that the correct album is selected.
- Check file format. Most frames accept JPEG files. Some also support PNG. Other formats like HEIF or RAW may not work. Convert your photos to JPEG if they are not showing up.
- Check file size. Very large photo files may fail to load on some frames. Resize photos to under 10 MB if you have problems.
Slideshow Is Too Fast or Too Slow
Open the frame's settings (either on the frame or in the app) and look for slideshow speed or transition interval. Set it to something comfortable. Most people prefer 15 seconds to one minute per photo.
Blurry or Stretched Photos
- Wrong aspect ratio. If a photo does not match the frame's aspect ratio, the frame crops or stretches it. For most frames, 16:10 or 4:3 photos look best. Check your frame's specs.
- Low resolution source. Photos downloaded from social media are often compressed and low quality. Use the original photo from your camera roll for the best results.
- Frame has a low resolution screen. If the frame itself is 1024 by 768 on a 15-inch screen, photos will look soft no matter what you do. See our resolution guide for recommended specs at each size.
Frame Keeps Restarting
- Check the power cable for damage or a loose connection.
- Try a different outlet.
- Update the firmware through the app or settings menu.
- Factory reset the frame if nothing else works.
- Contact the manufacturer for warranty support if the issue continues.
When to Contact Support
If you have tried the fixes above and the frame still has problems, contact the manufacturer. Most brands have email support and online help articles. Aura, Nixplay, and Skylight all have responsive support teams. Have your frame's model number and serial number ready when you reach out.
